QFX file for Quicken: layout and how to import it

Short answer

QFX is the file Quicken imports as a downloaded bank statement. In Quicken for Windows choose File, File Import, Web Connect (.QFX) File. On a Mac choose File, Import, Bank or Brokerage File (OFX, QFX). Quicken says it doesn’t support QFX files made by third-party converters, so if yours is refused, try OFX.

What the format is

QFX is Quicken’s own version of Web Connect. Like QBO, it is OFX 1.02 with an Intuit bank ID, and only the file name ending differs.

Which software takes it

Quicken for Windows and Quicken for Mac. For other programs use OFX. QIF files don’t work with Web Connect.

How our file is laid out

The content is the same as our QBO file: the FI block with ORG and FID, INTU.BID, the account, and the transactions. The Bank ID defaults to 3000 and you can change it in the export options. NAME is cut to 32 characters with the full text in MEMO, and every transaction has a stable FITID.

How to import it

Quicken for Windows

  1. 01Back up your Quicken data file.
  2. 02Choose File, File Import, Web Connect (.QFX) File. Some versions label the item Quicken Transfer Format (.QFX) File.
  3. 03Browse to the .qfx file and open it.
  4. 04Link it to an existing account or create one, then follow the prompts.
  5. 05Review the transactions in the register.

Quicken for Mac

  1. 01Choose File, Import, Bank or Brokerage File (OFX, QFX).
  2. 02Select the .qfx file, then choose the account it belongs to.

Common errors and fixes

Quicken refuses the file or can’t verify the bank

Quicken’s help doesn’t cover this message. Given what Quicken says about converted files, try the OFX version instead, and contact Quicken support if that fails too.

Error OL-221

Quicken says this can come from your computer’s date and time settings. Check them, then try again.

The file opens in the wrong program or not at all

On Windows, set .qfx files to open with Quicken in Default Programs, or skip that and import through the File menu.

Duplicates

Quicken says to delete one copy of each duplicate. Each transaction has a stable ID, but if you also download from your bank, those IDs differ from ours, so avoid importing overlapping dates.

Questions

Is QFX different from QBO?
Not in content. It is the same OFX with the same Intuit bank ID line. QFX is the name Quicken uses.
Should I use OFX instead?
Try QFX first on Windows. If Quicken won’t take it, try OFX. Quicken for Mac’s import menu names OFX files as well as QFX.
Can I import a QIF file?
Quicken says QIF files don’t work with Web Connect. Tableaf doesn’t write QIF.
How do I know the transactions are right?
Each statement is checked against its printed opening and closing balances before you export. If they don’t match, the review screen shows the difference so you can fix it first.
Is my statement uploaded anywhere?
No. A PDF with real text is read by code running in your browser tab, and the file is built there too. Nothing is sent to our servers. How we handle your data.
Does this work on scanned statements?
Not yet. Tableaf reads PDFs that contain real text, which is what most banks give you when you download a statement. Reading scanned or photographed pages (OCR) is coming soon.
What does it cost?
Five pages a day are free with no account, in every format and with the balance check. Paid plans are on the pricing page.
